Shoko Seki – Contemporary Dancer

Shoko began performing Classical Ballet from the age of five at Nagamatsu Ballet in her hometown of Fukuoka, Japan.

And through the care of visiting international teachers she was exposed to an eclectic mix of techniques such as the Royal and Vangova method from a young age.

She graduated from Showa University of Music with an undergraduate degree in Ballet in March 2011, with exposure to the Balanchine program, which included a study-abroad programme at the Royal Academy of Dance in London.

Immediately after graduating, Shoko joined the prestigious Noism2 company in Nigata from June 2011 to July 2014, the only residential contemporary company in Japan. Here, she was featured in a wide variety of performances that were choreographed by the hugely celebrated Jo Kanamori, Yuki Yamada and Yoshifumi Inao, and was honored to be selected to appear in the Seiji Ozawa’s music festival in Japan, Beijing and Shanghai.

In addition to freelance dance performances and choreography work, she works as a dancer and choreographer for SnC (Contemporary Project Dance Company), and a teacher of classical ballet and contemporary dance.

She participated in the Hong Kong International Choreography Festival in March-April 2016 and May-June 2017.

August 2017 marks her Edinburugh Fringe Festival debut.
